Last September we promised customers like you a detailed newsletter on the new Mafell NFU 50 Groove Cutter and we’re just getting around to it now! One of the fastest growth areas we’ve seen at Timberwolf Tools are the various routers and mortisers that we offer. Our customers are making a LOT of wood chips these days, and other tool brands typically don’t pack the punch needed for these demanding applications. Mafell makes several Groove Cutting Tools like this with the ability to produce a range of lap joints, dados and tenons. These tools are MUCH faster and more accurate than the old school method of doing multiple passes with a circular saw. Because there are so many different cutter heads available, we thought it best to diagram each groove size today so you can whittle down the best option for your shop:

The Crowd Favorite

Of all these options, the Mafell NFU 50 with the accessory Expanding Groove Cutter Head consistently receives the highest marks from our customers. The Mafell ZK 115Ec is superb when larger grooves are needed, but it’s a noticeable jump in price and weight. The smaller Mafell MF26cc/400 has a normal 120V motor making it easier to plug in, but it must be actively held in the "down" position (as you would a spring-loaded plunge saw). And the Mafell KFU 1000E is a niche tool for much smaller grooves in flooring applications.

Please call us at 1-800-869-4169 if you have questions about running 230V tools since not all American shops have this power setup. Also note the Mafell NFU 50 loses 6mm of cutting depth (~1/4") when using its special guide track, but this track is amazing and should be used whenever possible as the Tutorial Videos demonstrate. It happens to be the same track used to turn the Mafell K85Ec Circular Saw into a Mafell KSS 80Ec/370 Cross-Cutting System, so the NFU 50 + K85Ec is a smart combo purchase.
